The 28th Institute on Teaching and Mentoring Has Been Cancelled
The SREB-State Doctoral Scholars Program has made the difficult decision to cancel the virtual Institute on Teaching and Mentoring, which had been scheduled for February 24-26.
We deeply regret that scholars will once again miss the experience of an Institute. Please know we are committed to exploring options to deliver the Institute experience in a format that is safe and effective.
Several major factors affected our ability to produce an Institute of the high quality that has historically been expected from the Program. We lost several staff members with significant responsibilities in planning the Institute. Many of our partners were encountering similar issues in coordinating schedules with scholars (a number of whom are still adjusting to pursuing a Ph.D. in the virtual environment) so they could participate in the virtual Institute. The Institute’s success depends upon the support and participation of these partners that share the goal of increasing faculty diversity in our nation’s colleges and universities.
And of course, a virtual Institute cannot fully replace the experiences that are most engaging and successful during our in-person Institutes, such as personal interactions and networking with scholars, faculty, recruiters, and presenters. SREB will be scheduling various topical webinars and other virtual offerings of Institute content for scholars throughout the spring. We will share information about those via the DSP web page, the Doctoral Chat Newsletter, and DSP social media.
The SREB-State Doctoral Scholars Program is dedicated to supporting our scholars, educators, and policy leaders as they work through challenges unfolding from the coronavirus. During this time of uncertainty, we continue to work with our partners on developing strategies, finding solutions, and sharing ideas and resources as we move forward. Our commitment to diversifying the professoriate through the Institute and associate programs is unwavering.
Many thanks to our scholars and our supporters for their continued patience and understanding. Don’t hesitate to contact me with questions or concerns.
Sincerely,
Ansley A. Abraham, Ph.D.
